External Stress is often blown out of proportion by our internal triggers.
What is often so debilitating about stress is that it is always triggered by events or situations external to us. Stress apparently leaves us feeling powerless, under its control and on edge as we wait for something to happen.
Psychotherapy helps us to understand that our racing heart, our tight breathing, tensed muscles and changed thinking is the result of HOW we assess the situation or event or even people who are part of the “stress story” we tell ourselves.
This view does not negate the pressures of the stressful situation at all. But I hope it gives us some hope that we are able to learn how to evaluate our own assessment of these situations, and choose a different outcome for ourselves.
Process Hypnotherapy, one of the solution focused therapy types, helps us to disconnect intentionally from the triggers we have spent our lives reacting to. In this way, we are able to achieve our goal of a peaceful and certainly less stressful life.
When choosing to understand HOW you think, what impact this has on your emotions and then how this influences the actions you take, you will be in a much better position to manage the stressors in your life.
